The club was founded in 1893 by the women of Freetown and Assonet in order to fulfill the needs of women in the very rural area they lived in. Modern life was for the folks in the city. They wanted to meet on a regular basis for educational, philanthropic and social reasons. Communication was difficult and they wanted to be able to help anyone in need and meeting on a regular basis them kept abreast of what was happening to others in town.
